The Welcome Back Dance; it was a tradition that reached back as any that Austin could remember. It was where he had met Jocelynn, exactly one year ago; well at Midnight it would be exactly one year. One year of bliss, and happy memories, and above all perfection. Okay the year hadn’t been perfect, but it felt perfect so it might as well be described as perfection. A lot had happened in that year, he and Joss started dating (obviously), the idiot of a sophomore, Bobby, had pissed him off on more than one occasion; every time it was because he was trying to see if Joss would go out with him. Joss’s and his relationship had even changed during that year. They went from the typical high school boyfriend/girlfriend dynamic, to becoming practically inseparable. They had fallen in love, and not the crappy imitation high school love that was really infatuation, just true, actual love.
The ticket had said that dress was to be semi formal. He refused to wear jeans and a shirt, like the farmers kids might possibly wear. No that was so embarrassingly ugly he might not have been able to live through it. Then there was the other extreme, the tux. He had one, all ready for prom and everything, not that he had been really willing to buy it at the time, but Joss had convinced him. After telling him that he looked, as she put it “so amazingly hot,” he laughed at the thought. Finally he decided upon a white button up shirt, long and skinny black tie, and black pants. Of course the dress shoes were a obvious choice. He grabbed the blazer that went with the pants just in case he got cold, or Joss. Even though it wasn’t all that likely, but it was just in case. Austin also grabbed the bouquet of roses, a single red to symbolize love and beauty; ten lavender for love at first sight; the was also a white rose, just one. for when given with a red one it symbolized unity. Chris had opted not to go, which was a mystery since every one usually went to the Welcome Back Dance, especially when he was dating that one little girl, ugh, Emma.
Austin made his way out of the house, after saying bye to his brother and ignoring his mom; and into his car. It was parked on the street, since there was no room in the driveway thanks to not only his mother and fathers cars, but Chris’s even though he couldn’t drive. He pulled out into the road, turning on the radio as he did so. It was already tuned to the radio, but he didn’t enjoy listening to it. So as he stopped at a red light, he plugged his i pod up, and played Aly and Aj’s Like Whoa. It was still playing as he stopped for a second time out front of Jocelynn’s house. He parked the car, leaving it running, and ran up to the door. He didn’t bother knocking, Mrs. Monroe never answered the door, and she always yelled for him to come in anyways. Austin merely waved to her as she sat in the living room, watching a show he didn’t care to see what it was exactly. He climbed the stairs, two at a time, until he reached Joss’s room. The door was already open, and he stepped into it, sitting in the stool he’d bought for occasions just like this.
“Hey Joss,” He said, looking at her, and her reflection in the mirror. She looked as beautiful as ever. “Take your time, I just wanted to see if you were almost ready. God you look so beautiful, not like you always don’t. But today is a special day, a very special day indeed. I have a present for you; did you want me to go get it? It’s just down in the car.” He couldn’t help but smile as he spoke, it was big. So he was sure that she could see every tooth in his mouth, he laughed at the thought. He had to look hilarious. But he always looked goofy, even now. He wasn’t one for formality, and he felt very formal, but not as formal as he would be at the prom. Austin had nightmares about the tuxedo that hung in his closet; still in the garment bag. He shook his head, wiping the thoughts from his head, as well as the creepy, eerie smile. The laugh however didn’t fade for a few moments.
Austin stood, clasping his left wrist with his right hand. It felt weird so he stopped. He was standing in preparation so that if she did say yes then he could go and get it. It had taken weeks to decide upon the perfect present. A rose was so over done so he had gone for a dozen, ten lavender and a single red and white. He had researched the meaning behind each colored rose, not wanting her to know, and then come to find out he had messed up majorly. That in and of itself would have ruined the entire night, but he knew he was safe with what he had chose. Now the only thing to worry about was whether or not she would like it.
Please just like it, please. If you do I’ll be the happiest person ever on the planet. Okay maybe not ever, but at that moment I will be. He thought, crossing his toes. He couldn’t cross his fingers that would have appeared awkward, but he could get the same luck, well hopefully he could, by crossing his toes. He felt a bead of sweat roll down his back, following his spine. That single bead, make a tingle go through his body. He didn’t know why he was so nervous; he had no reason to be. Joss would say if she wanted the gift now, or later, preferably now; mostly because he didn’t want them to die in the car. One thing was certain, she would see it. And one thing was up in the air, not exactly how it would turn out; would she like it or not?
